How To Choose A Therapist For Anxiety

Selecting a therapist can feel overwhelming as you embark on this significant and intimate journey. Here are essential considerations:

Qualifications and Credentials: Ensure your therapist holds professional credentials. This ensures proper education, training, and adherence to ethical standards, including confidentiality.

Treatment Approach: Inquire about the therapist’s modalities. Is their approach evidence-based? Understanding their methods is crucial for effective treatment.

Personal Connection: The relationship between you and your therapist plays an important role and influences the effecitivness of therapy overall. Many factors will influence the connection you feel (or dont feel) with a therapist. Seek a sense of understanding and safety. Every therapist has a unique style. For example, some use humor, while others maintain a serious tone. Ultimately, finding a therapist with whom you feel a strong personal connection is crucial for maximizing the effectiveness of therapy.

Accessibility: Consider convenience. Do you prefer in-person sessions or telehealth? Also, evaluate availability and scheduling hours.

Many therapists offer free assessments. Take advantage of this opportunity to talk to the therapist, ask questions, and get a sense of their approach. Prepare a list of your key concerns to ask the therapist during the assessment.

Finding the right therapist is essential for your well-being. Trust your instincts and prioritize your journey toward mental health.

How Often Should You See A Therapist For Anxiety?

There isn't a one-size-fits-all protocol for the frequency of therapy sessions for anxiety. It varies widley and is dependent on individual needs, severity of symptoms, treatment goals, and therapist recommendations.

However, there are some common approaches:

Weekly Sessions: This is the most common frequency schedule for individual therapy, to establish rapport, assess progress, and work on developing coping strategies.

Biweekly or Monthly Sessions: As therapy progresses and symptoms improve, frequency often transitions to biweekly or monthly to maintain progress, address any new challenges, and continue building upon skills learned in therapy.

Intensive or Short-term Therapy: In some cases, individuals may benefit from intensive therapy approaches, such as intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) or structured treatment programs, which may involve multiple sessions per week for a limited duration.

As-Needed: For individuals with milder symptoms sessions may be scheduled on an as-needed basis, allowing for flexibility in addressing specific concerns or issues as they arise.

Ultimately, the frequency of therapy sessions should be tailored to the individual's unique needs and circumstances, in collaboration with their therapist. It's essential for individuals to communicate their preferences and goals with their therapist to ensure that the frequency of sessions aligns with their treatment plan and promotes progress towards improved mental health and well-being

What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely used and effective form of therapy. CBT helps us to recognize the connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and specifically how one influences the other.

CBT is based on the premise that our thoughts and beliefs influence our emotions and behaviors, and that by identifying and challenging negative, inaccurate, or unhelpful thought patterns, individuals can learn to replace them with more balanced and adaptive ways of thinking.

CBT aims to teach practical skills and strategies to cope with and manage symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. It is a structured, goal-oriented approach that emphasizes collaboration between the therapist and client to achieve positive change

How Authentic-Life Counseling Can Help Treat Anxiety?

The type of anxiety disorder one has may effect the type of treatment. However, treatments modalities will all include disrupting and changing irrational thinking patterns as well as establishing healhy behavioral patterns.

The primary therapy used at Authentic-Life Counseling to treat anxiety disorders is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with a strong emphasis on mindfulness and meditation.

Ulimately mindfulness teaches us to distinguish between a thought, and the awareness which can observe the thought. The thought, and the awareness that can observe the thought are two things, not the same things. This distance allows us to take our thoughts less seriously, be more flexible in our thinking, more observant and less stressed.

In addition to changing thinking patterns, anxiety can be reduced by changing physical reactions in the body. This therapeutic approach involves behavioral changes that “rewire” automatic physical reactions.
